Microsoft Azure: MCP vendor profile
Microsoft Azure exposes REST APIs as remote MCP servers through API Management's AI gateway, hosts MCP tool functions with the Azure Functions MCP extension, and publishes an open-source MCP Gateway for Kubernetes, as documented by the vendor. MCP server support in API Management applies to the Developer, Basic, Basic v2, Standard, Standard v2, Premium and Premium v2 tiers (learn.microsoft.com).

What it does for this layer
The Azure Functions MCP extension does not support PowerShell apps, and with the SSE transport it relies on Azure Queue storage in the host storage account (learn.microsoft.com). Locally the Functions MCP extension needs Azure Functions Core Tools 4.0.7030 or later and Microsoft.Azure.Functions.Worker 2.1.0 or later (learn.microsoft.com). Microsoft's open-source MCP Gateway is "a reverse proxy and management layer for MCP servers" with session-aware stateful routing on Kubernetes; the repository is MIT licensed with about 907 stars on 5 Nov 2026 (github.com).
Azure API Management can expose a REST API it manages as a remote MCP server through its built-in AI gateway, turning API operations into MCP tools (learn.microsoft.com). API Management MCP servers built from REST APIs support tools only, not MCP resources or prompts, and MCP servers are not supported in workspaces (learn.microsoft.com). API Management can also front existing MCP servers hosted outside API Management (learn.microsoft.com).
The Azure Functions MCP extension creates remote MCP servers from functions with tool, resource and prompt triggers (learn.microsoft.com).

What it does not do
- API Management does not turn non-HTTP API types into MCP servers.
