Kong turns APIs behind Kong Gateway or published in its Dev Portal into MCP servers, proxies MCP traffic with the AI MCP Proxy plugin, and lists an AI Registry product, on-premises or in Konnect, as documented by the vendor. Kong's product menu lists an "AI Registry" marked NEW alongside AI Gateway and Context Mesh (konghq.com).
Kong offers two ways to expose APIs as MCP servers: AI Gateway, which converts any Gateway API into an MCP server, and Dev Portal, which generates one from APIs already published there (developer.konghq.com). The AI MCP Proxy plugin acts as a protocol bridge between MCP and HTTP, with a mode parameter that proxies MCP requests, converts RESTful APIs into MCP tools, or exposes grouped tools as an MCP server (developer.konghq.com).
In conversion modes the Kong plugin maps each MCP tool call to an OpenAPI operation and must be scoped to a Route; consumer and consumer-group scoping is not supported in any mode (developer.konghq.com). Kong's MCP Traffic Gateway works on-premises and in Konnect (developer.konghq.com).
