# Spring AI: MCP vendor profile

Spring AI builds on the MCP Java SDK with Spring Boot starters for MCP clients and servers, annotation-based tool handling, and the Spring WebFlux and WebMVC transports, as documented by the vendor. ## What it does for this layer

Starting with Spring AI 2.0, the Spring-specific transports mcp-spring-webflux and mcp-spring-webmvc moved from the MCP Java SDK into the Spring AI project, which Spring calls a breaking change ([docs.spring.io](https://docs.spring.io/spring-ai/reference/api/mcp/mcp-overview.html)). The Java MCP implementation documented by Spring AI uses a three-layer architecture with the transport layer at the bottom ([docs.spring.io](https://docs.spring.io/spring-ai/reference/api/mcp/mcp-overview.html)).
