# CLIs vs MCP

Product engineer: A CLI is the cheaper first act surface for developer products. Developer-platform lead: AgentReady.org accepts either for the act-layer MUST. Agent builder: Coding agents use both; chat agents need MCP. A CLI runs in the agent's terminal; an MCP server runs remotely with OAuth. Stripe, Vercel and Neon now use their CLIs to configure their MCP servers.

## The sourced difference

A CLI runs in the agent's terminal; an MCP server runs remotely with OAuth. Stripe, Vercel and Neon now use their CLIs to configure their MCP servers. ## Verdicts by reader

| Reader | Verdict |
| --- | --- |
| Product engineer | A CLI is the cheaper first act surface for developer products. |
| Developer-platform lead | AgentReady.org accepts either for the act-layer MUST. |
| Agent builder | Coding agents use both; chat agents need MCP. |

## Side by side

| Aspect | CLIs | MCP |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Maintainer | Each vendor | MCP maintainers under the Agentic AI Foundation |
| What it is | A command-line tool, usually on npm, that an agent runs in a shell; the same questions apply to each: install path, auth without a browser, machine-readable output, and whether it configures MCP. | A JSON-RPC 2.0 protocol between hosts, clients and servers; servers offer tools, resources and prompts, and clients may offer elicitation. |
| Status and version | Common practice; AgentReady.org (launched 19 Oct 2026) lists "an MCP server or a CLI, at least one" as a MUST for the act layer. | Current revision 2026-07-28 (released 28 Jul 2026); prior revision 2025-11-25. Registry in preview with API v0.1 frozen since 24 Oct 2025. |
| What it does not do | Does not help agents that cannot run a shell, such as chat-only assistants; output formats differ by vendor. | Does not grade servers, verify registry entries, or prescribe a .well-known discovery file in the 2026-07-28 core spec; server cards are still Working Group work. |

## Seen in the directory

36 companies in the directory have a CLI package on record, out of 1,336. The figure is a floor: a package is checked only where a source names it. See [the CLI guide](https://agentmcpdirectory.com/guides/ship-a-cli-for-agents/).

## Seen in the shared crawl

| Path | Top 10,000 found | Ora leaderboard found |
| --- | --- | --- |
| /.well-known/mcp.json | 19 of 7,470 (0.25%) | 66 of 3,366 (1.96%) |

A path counts only when the answer is the right kind of document. Many sites answer these paths with an ordinary web page, which is not counted. See [the census](https://agentmcpdirectory.com/census/).
